Steve Jenner Another stunning collection of guitar pieces by Yorkshire's finest. Ranging from the ambiantsque (is that a word?) 'A Moment' and 'For the Coming Storm' to the more upbeat 'Leo Green's House' this collection is yet another showcase for Scott's considerable talents. Favorite track: A Moment.

andrewmoorhouse A brilliant new collection of guitar instrumentals. I love the ‘space’ given to tracks such as ‘A Moment’, ‘Our Collective Lostness’ and ‘For The Coming Storm’ with their classical influences, so reflective, thoughtful and sensitively played. The more upbeat numbers lift the mood and over us hope out of this lockdown melancholy we all find ourselves in. The whole album is the perfect antidote to our troubled times.

about

Heavy Manners

'Heavy Manners' is the third and final installment of Scott Wainwright's solo instrumental guitar trilogy, following up and developing on, both 'Sentimental Debris' and 'Collapsed Ideals' albums. Once again, Scott takes his guitar through various styles and genres of music, attempting to express his admiration of and to pay homage to the music and the artists that inspire him.

A number of these pieces were written during the Covid-19 pandemic lock-down, which has brought with it enforced time off of the road for musicians across the globe. With this inability to be able to travel and work before a live audience, there is to be found, a number of troubles and worries. In this stressful time, music is always a balm for the soul and reflected in some of the pieces is a calmness that Scott used to bring peace and tranquility to his own life and he hopes that it might have the same affect on the listener.

Pieces like 'A Moment', 'Blue Sky Thinking' and 'For The Coming Storm' are an attempt at ambient music for the acoustic guitar. Within these pieces, there is a lot space between the notes and chord changes, giving both the player, and the listener, plenty of room for calm reflection.

'Exhibitionist Stomp' is a typical fast paced piece based on ragtime and banjo rolls, while the more alert listener and follower of Scott's music will recognise the reworking of a couple of other upbeat tunes from the album 'Talking Backwoods'. 'Leo Greens House' (a.k.a Leo's Greenhouse) and 'Still Dancing' (a.k.a Eleanor's Dance) have been reworked and reset as purely acoustic songs, not because Scott was dissatisfied with the other versions, but more because he finds them enjoyable to play and there was room for improvisation and reworking within the two tunes.

There are also nods to both classical guitar and Cuban guitar styles in the pieces 'Our Collective Lostness' and the long form piece 'It Seems So Far Away'. These are again, an absorption of styles that have been enjoyed by Scott as a listener and a music lover.

As with the previous albums in this trilogy, all the pieces were recorded by Phil Snell at Limbo Studios in a single four hour session. Most of the pieces are first or second takes.
